The story behind
Heart (It’s a Demo!), according to DoReSol
The song *Heart (It’s a Demo!)* by Neneh Cherry, although not the one that achieved the greatest fame, allows us to glimpse the creative process of an album that marked a milestone. It is a preliminary version, a draft, which reveals the raw energy that would later be refined to shape *Raw Like Sushi*. This debut album, released in 1989 by Virgin Records, became the Swedish artist’s introduction to the world, and this early take of *Heart (It’s a Demo!)* offers a glimpse into the foundations of that work.
The story of Neneh Cherry is a journey that took her from Sweden to London. Born as Neneh Mariann Karlsson, daughter of a Swedish mother and a father from Sierra Leone, her childhood was marked by the tours of her stepfather, the musician Don Cherry. After moving to London, she immersed herself in the music scene, becoming part of bands like The Cherries. This journey, filled with diverse influences, is reflected in the music she would create. The album *Raw Like Sushi* included hits like *Buffalo Stance*, which had a notable run on charts such as the UK Singles Chart and the Billboard Hot 100, as well as reaching number one in the Netherlands and Sweden. It also featured other tracks that resonated, like *Kisses on the Wind* and *Manchild*. In later years, Neneh Cherry continued to explore her sound, even collaborating on the 2005 album *Demon Days* by Gorillaz, lending her voice to *Kids With Guns*.
