The story behind

Havana Affair, according to DoReSol

When you dive into Havana Affair, you encounter the Ramones' trademark: direct humor, this time aimed at the Bay of Pigs invasion. The song, which lasts just 1:57, is a good example of how they managed to condense ideas into a concise format. It's interesting to note that, despite their raw and direct sound, the band pioneered laying the groundwork for a genre that opposed the complexity and ostentation of 1970s popular music. Their minimalist and repetitive approach, with sometimes simple lyrics or even ones without apparent meaning, strongly contrasted with the extended guitar solos and progressive structures that dominated the scene.

The recording of their first album, Ramones, which includes this track, was a remarkably fast and economical process. It took place in just seven days, with a budget of $6,400. Producer Craig Leon played a key role, convincing Seymour Stein, president of Sire Records, to listen to the band. The band had already recorded a demo that circulated among record labels. Recording engineer Rob Freeman and Don Hünerberg worked on the sessions, while Thomas Erdelyi is also credited as a producer. The iconic album cover, photographed by Roberta Bayley for Punk magazine, shows the four members leaning against a brick wall in New York. The band formed in Forest Hills, Queens, New York, in 1974, and became a central figure in the city's punk scene, sharing stages with bands like Patti Smith, Television, Talking Heads, Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers, and Blondie.
