The story behind
Greystone Chapel, according to DoReSol
The song *Greystone Chapel* has a particular story behind its recording. It was composed by Glen Sherley, an inmate, and came into Johnny Cash's hands at a time when he was looking to revitalize his career. After several years of lesser impact, Cash became interested in recording in a prison environment, an idea that had been brewing since his 1955 song, *Folsom Prison Blues*.
The opportunity arose in 1968, when Bob Johnston took over the production of Cash's material at Columbia Records. Johnny Cash, accompanied by June Carter, Carl Perkins, and his band, the Tennessee Three, performed two concerts at Folsom State Prison in California, on January 13th of that year. From these performances, the live album *At Folsom Prison* emerged, released by Columbia Records on May 6, 1968. Despite limited initial promotion by the record label, the album reached the top spot on the Country Music charts. The duration of *Greystone Chapel* is 5:34.
