The story behind

The song Good Love has a rather peculiar origin story, linked to a project that ultimately never saw the light of day. It was recorded in 1986, intended for an album called Camille, where Prince experimented with his voice, altering it to create an androgynous register. The idea was to release this material without revealing his identity, but the project was halted shortly before its release. Some of the pieces created for Camille ended up being part of other works, with 1987's Sign o' the Times being one of the most notable destinations.

When the Camille project was canceled, Good Love found a new home on the soundtrack of the film Bright Light Big City, produced by Warner Bros. Later, to avoid conflicts with that use, Prince made an edited version to include it on his album Crystal Ball, released in 1998. This track is characterized by a strong presence of synthesizers and a sound reminiscent of synth-pop, with Prince using his sped-up voice, a resource he explored extensively in his mid-80s funk compositions. The lyrics, for their part, are quite vivid and descriptive, speaking of the affection he receives from his partner. In the studio, during the recording, there are said to have been interesting interactions between Susan Rogers Susannah and Jill Jones, while Prince was in a relationship with Susannah Melvoin at the time. Jill Jones was also at an important stage, preparing to release her own album in 1987.
