The story behind

The story behind Rebirth of the Flesh is fascinating, especially considering it originated from a project that never saw the light of day at the time. Originally conceived as part of an album under the name Camille, a female alter ego created by Prince by manipulating his voice to an androgynous register, this track was gestated in 1986. The idea was to release it without revealing the identity of the artist behind it. However, the project was halted shortly before its planned release, and some of the pieces recorded for Camille ended up being integrated into other works, with 1987's Sign o' the Times being one of the most notable destinations. The recorded duration for this version is 5:28.

In March 2022, Third Man Records announced that it had acquired the rights to finally release this material. Prince Rogers Nelson, born in Minneapolis in 1958 and passed away in Chanhassen in 2016, was a multifaceted artist who explored genres such as rock, soul, funk, and new wave. During the 1980s, he established himself as a key figure in musical innovation, being recognized as the creator of the so-called "Minneapolis sound." This style began to take shape from his third album, Dirty Mind, and was defined in 1981 with Controversy, as well as notably influencing the debut album of The Time. His peak popularity arrived with the album Purple Rain in 1984, which also gave its title to a film. In the United States, his album sales exceed 39.5 million, and worldwide they are around 100 million. The track Purple Rain earned him an Oscar for best original song score, and the album also received a Grammy Award. Other hits from that period include When Doves Cry and Let's Go Crazy.
