The story behind

The song Gimme Some Truth began as a direct outcry against political hypocrisy, but its sound has older roots. John Lennon sketched it in January 1969 during the Get Back sessions, when he was still part of The Beatles, though there was no room to record it at the time. The lyrics, laden with irony and frustration, use the nickname "Tricky Dicky" to refer to Richard Nixon and criticize politicians who promise half-truths while manipulating public opinion. The title itself plays on the double meaning of "truth" and the children's song Old Mother Hubbard, where the lack of clear answers leaves everything in an empty cupboard.

The final version was recorded in 1971 for the album Imagine, produced by Lennon alongside Yoko Ono and Phil Spector. The track was recorded in three different studios: Ascot Sound Studios, EMI Recording Studios, and Record Plant in New York, with musicians like George Harrison on guitar and Klaus Voormann on bass. At 3:15 in length, the song reflects the protest climate of the era, when social discontent against the Vietnam War and deceitful leaders echoed on every corner. It is not just a protest song: it is a reminder that, sometimes, music can be the clearest megaphone when official words turn opaque.
