The story behind

Focus on Sanity, according to DoReSol

The title Focus on Sanity is not only the fourth track on The Shape of Jazz to Come, but it almost became the album's name. Ornette Coleman wanted it to be so, but producer Nesuhi Ertegun preferred The Shape of Jazz to Come to help the public better understand the proposal: a record that broke with established norms. Recorded in May 1959 in Hollywood, at Radio Recorders studios, this session marked the debut of the quartet with Don Cherry on trumpet, Charlie Haden on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums. The result was a sound that defied conventions, where improvisation flowed freely without constraints, and each instrument conversed as if the other did not exist.

The track Focus on Sanity lasts six minutes and fifty seconds, long enough to immerse oneself in its hypnotic atmosphere. In 2012, the Library of Congress included it in the National Recording Registry, recognizing its historical value. Although the album did not achieve immediate commercial success, today it is heard in lists such as those of Rolling Stone and remains a reference for musicians seeking to explore limitless sonic territories. It was not just a jazz album: it was a declaration of freedom.
