C G
You got a fast car
Em D4
I want a ticket to anywhere
C G
Maybe we make a deal
Em D4
Maybe together we can get somewhere
C G
Any place is better
Em D4
Startin' from zero, got nothin' to lose
C G
Maybe we'll make somethin'
Em D4
Me, myself, I got nothin' to prove
( C G Em D4 )
( C G Em D4 )
C G
You got a fast car
Em D4
I got a plan to get us outta here
C G
And work another convenience store
Em D4
Managed to save just a little bit of money
C G
Won't have to drive too far
Em D4
Just across the border and into the city
C G
You and I can both get jobs
Em D4
Finally see what it means to be livin'
( C G Em D4 )
( C G Em D4 )
C G
See, my old man's got a problem
Em D4
He live in the bottle, that's the way it is
C G
He said: his body's too old for workin'
Em D4
His body's too young to look like his
C G
So mama went off and left him
Em D4
She wanted more from life than he could give
C G
I said: Somebody's gotta take care of him
Em D4
So I quit school and that's what I did
( C G Em D4 )
( C G Em D4 )
C G
You got a fast car
Em D4
Is it fast enough so we can fly away?
C G
You gotta make a decision
Em D4
Leave tonight or live and die this way
( C G Em D4 )
( C G Em D4 )
Chorus
C
So I remember when we were drivin'
Drivin' in your car
G
Speed so fast, I felt like I was drunk
Em
City lights lay out before us
D
And your arm felt nice wrapped
Around my shoulder
C Em D
I had a feelin' that I belonged
C Em D
I had a feelin' I could be someone
C D
Be someone, be someone
( C G Em D4 )
( C G Em D4 )
Verse
C G
You got a fast car
Em D4
We go cruisin', entertain ourselves
C G
Still ain't got a job
Em D4
Now work in the market as a checkout girl
C G
I know things will get better
Em D4
You'll find work and I'll get promoted
C G
And we'll move out of the shelter
Em D4
Buy a bigger house and live in the suburbs
( C G Em D4 )
( C G Em D4 )

The song «Fast Car» was written and performed by American artist Tracy Chapman. The track was released on April 6, 1988, as the first single from her debut album, which shares her name and was published that same year. The performance of the song during the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute boosted its popularity, managing to place it among the ten most listened-to songs in the United States, reaching sixth place on the Billboard Hot 100. In the United Kingdom, it reached fifth place on the UK Singles Chart. In 1989, «Fast Car» was nominated for two Grammy Awards in the categories of Record of the Year and Song of the Year, in addition to receiving a nomination for the MTV Video Music Award for Best Female Video. Critic Chris Gerard of Metro Weekly describes «Fast Car» as a realistic narrative about a working-class woman seeking to escape poverty, with a folk rock musical style. Thom Duffy of the Orlando Sentinel described the song's arrangement as «subtle folk-rock», while Gary Trust of Billboard considered it a blend of folk and pop. Dave Marsh opined that it could be an «optimistic folk-rock narrative», featuring characters who find themselves in a homeless shelter. Rolling Stone magazine ranked the song at number 167 on its list of the 500 greatest songs of all time, making it the only one by Chapman on the list and the highest-ranked song written and performed by a woman. Pitchfork placed it at number 86 on its list of the 200 best songs of the 1980s. In April 2011, «Fast Car» re-entered the UK top ten, reaching fourth place after Michael Collings performed it on Britain's Got Talent. In 2014, the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) certified it as a Platinum disc in the United Kingdom, thanks to digital downloads and streams. As of January 2016, it had sold 661,500 copies in the United Kingdom. In 2015, British DJ and producer Jonas Blue released a tropical house version of «Fast Car», serving as the first single from his debut album Blue, featuring vocals from British singer Dakota. This version, known as «The Club Mix», was included in the compilation Jonas Blue: Electronic Nature - The Mix 2017. The Jonas Blue version reached second place on the UK Singles Chart, surpassing Chapman's original position, which was fifth in May 1988 and improved following a re-release in April 2011. Outside the United Kingdom, the Jonas Blue version reached number one in Australia and Hungary, and placed within the top ten in Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, New Zealand, and Sweden. In the United States, it topped Billboard's dance music chart. «Fast Car» has been covered by numerous artists, including The Flying Pickets, Hundred Reasons, Xiu Xiu, Vertical Horizon, Darwin's Waiting Room, Amazing Transparent Man, MYMP, Mutya Buena, Kristian Leontiou, Wayne Wonder, David Usher, Linda Pritchard, Boyce Avenue (with Kina Grannis), Christian Kane, Mark Wilkinson, Elizabeth Gillies, Hitomi Yaida, Ryan Montbleau (with Tall Heights), Passenger, and Jess Moskaluke (with WG Snuffy Walden).
