Faithfully

The song Faithfully was born on a tour bus, amid the rattling of the wheels and the silence of the night. Jonathan Cain, keyboardist of Journey, scribbled on a paper napkin the first lines that came to mind: *"highway run into the midnight sun"*. The next day, in just half an hour, he finished writing the full lyrics. It wasn’t a common process for him; he described the experience as almost supernatural, as if the song had been revealed to him. Even Neal Schon, the band’s guitarist, later recalled that Cain had confessed the melody had come to him in a dream. They first performed it on stage at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, with a grand piano backstage, and from that moment it was clear it wasn’t just any ballad.

The song is about the struggle to maintain a relationship when work forces you to be far away. Cain wrote it thinking of his own life: married and constantly on tour, under the pressure to be faithful both to his wife and to the band. In the lyrics, the narrator vows *"I'm forever yours... Faithfully"*, but the irony is that, shortly after its release, Cain and his wife divorced. The chorus, with its melody that drags on like an endless road, captures that mix of devotion and exhaustion. The recording took place in 1982, during the Frontiers album sessions, and hit the market in April 1983 as the second single from the record. It reached number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100, cementing Journey as the kings of eighties power ballads. The video, which showed the band on tour, became a model for other artists: from Bon Jovi to Genesis, many copied that idea of showing life on stage as a reflection of the lyrics. Even today, when someone mentions a *power ballad*, someone else is likely to bring up Faithfully.
