Frontiers

The album Frontiers, released on February 1, 1983, by Columbia Records, marks a significant moment in the career of Journey. This is their eighth studio album and the last to feature bassist Ross Valory until his return in 1996. With a sound that blends pop rock and hard rock, Frontiers is characterized by its polished production and the mix of powerful guitars with prominent keyboard arrangements. Despite receiving mixed reviews, the album reached number two on the Billboard 200 and spawned several singles that climbed into the Top 40, such as "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)", "Faithfully", and "After the Fall".

About the album

Frontiers, according to DoReSol

One of the most interesting stories behind this album is that, just before its release, changes were made to the tracklist. In a last-minute meeting, it was decided to replace "Ask the Lonely" and "Only the Young" with "Back Talk" and "Troubled Child". Interestingly, "Ask the Lonely" later appeared on the soundtrack of the film Two of a Kind, while "Only the Young" became a Top Ten single two years later thanks to its inclusion in the soundtrack of Vision Quest.

The album cover art, designed by Jim Welch, marks a shift in the band’s aesthetic, as it is the first album since Next (1977) not to feature the work of Stanley Mouse and Alton Kelley. Welch described his concept as an exploration of tunnels and the relativity of time, drawing inspiration from Einstein’s theory. Despite varied criticism, where some argued the album felt like a continuation of their previous style, Frontiers was certified six times platinum by the RIAA, cementing its commercial success. In 2008, critic Paul Elliott of Classic Rock went so far as to call "Faithfully" "the greatest power ballad of all time", highlighting the lasting impact this album had on rock music.
