The story behind

When you face Electioneering, you encounter a raw energy that seems to emanate from a heated speech. The song evokes the image of a politician shouting through a microphone, a sonic representation of criticism towards a capitalist society. It is said that the inspiration for this track came from protests against the poll tax, and that tension is felt in every note. The lyrics, in general, paint a picture of a world overwhelmed by excessive consumption, social disconnection, technological anxiety, and political corruption, also touching on themes such as transport, uniformity, paranoia, death, and modern life in the United Kingdom.

The recording of OK Computer, the album to which Electioneering belongs, took place in 1996 and early 1997. Much of the work was done in their own rehearsal space in Oxfordshire, and also at the historic St Catherine's Court mansion in Bath. Under the guidance of producer Nigel Godrich, the band sought to distance themselves from the guitar-centric sound and introspective lyrics of their previous work, The Bends. Instead, they opted for more abstract lyrics, dense soundscapes, and a variety of influences, laying the groundwork for their later, more experimental musical exploration. The composition of Electioneering, like the rest of the album, is attributed to Colin Greenwood, Ed O'Brien, Jonny Greenwood, Phil Selway, and Thom Yorke. The song has a duration of 3 minutes and 51 seconds, and its production involved recording engineers Jon Bailey, Gerard Navarro, and Chris Scard, while the mixing was handled by Nigel Godrich.
