The story behind
El cosechero, according to DoReSol
The song El cosechero, performed by Mercedes Sosa, brings us the vivid image of a man working the land, a figure that evokes a deep connection with the soil and the cycle of life. Sosa's voice, known as La Negra Sosa or The Voice of America, gives this piece a particular resonance, charged with the essence of Argentine folklore. With a duration of 2 minutes and 35 seconds, the song unfolds with a simplicity that, however, holds great narrative strength, inviting the listener to imagine that rural landscape and the work of the cosechero (harvester).
Born in San Miguel de Tucumán in 1935 and passed away in Buenos Aires in 2009, Mercedes Sosa became a central figure in Latin American music. She was one of the promoters of the Movimiento del Nuevo Cancionero (New Song Movement) and a key exponent of Nueva canción latinoamericana (New Latin American Song), a movement that sought to express the social and cultural reality of the region through music. She herself considered herself a "cantora" (singer), a distinction that marked an important difference within this movement, understanding that being a cantor implied a responsibility and a need for expression beyond mere vocal skill. Throughout her career, she also explored other genres such as tango, rock, and pop, enriching her musical proposal. Her legacy includes memorable interpretations of songs like Alfonsina y el mar, Gracias a la vida, and Todo cambia, as well as significant albums like Canciones con fundamento (1965), Mujeres argentinas (1969), and Homenaje a Violeta Parra (1971).
