Easy Skanking

Bob Marley & The Wailers recorded Easy Skanking at a time when reggae was moving away from its combative tone to embrace a more intimate vibe. The song floats over a rhythm that doesn’t rush: it’s the kind of track you listen to with your eyes closed, as if time itself stretched just so the guitar and bass could intertwine without hurry. The recording of Easy Skanking was part of the sessions that culminated in the album Kaya, released in 1978. That record emerged from takes that began with Exodus in 1977, when the band had already spent years experimenting with new sounds between Jamaica and London. The result was an album many greeted with skepticism: instead of the political messages that had defined them, here the focus was on love and the kind of calm only kaya—the herb that gave the album its name—could bring. Easy Skanking fit perfectly into that mood: at just 2:57, it’s an invitation to move without haste, as if ska had turned into a slow waltz. Producer Chris Blackwell and engineer Terry Barham ensured the sound was clean yet warm, without the artificial sheen that sometimes ruins live recordings. When Kaya hit the shelves, the album climbed to the UK top five, just as Marley returned to Jamaica for the One Love Peace Concert, as if the record and the event were two sides of the same celebration.
