The story behind
Dressed for Success, according to DoReSol
When approaching Dressed for Success, we encounter a recording that, despite internal tensions during its creation, ended up enhancing Marie Fredriksson's performance. She herself recounts that, after a session full of disagreements about arrangements and key changes, and feeling exhausted, she recorded a vocal guide that turned out to be the definitive take. "I did it in one go and suddenly I realized, 'this is it,'" she commented. This raw energy is perceived in the final result, a piece that was originally released in Sweden on June 28, 1988, as the first single to promote the album Look Sharp!.
Following the unexpected success of Look Sharp! in North America, Dressed for Success was re-released internationally on January 10, 1989, becoming a global hit. The song reached the Top 10 in Australia in September 1989 and number 18 in the United Kingdom in November 1990. In the United States, it entered the Billboard Hot 100 on May 27, 1989, reaching number 14 on July 29 of the same year. The recording of the album, which included Dressed for Success, took place between March and September 1988 in studios in Stockholm and London, with Anders Herrlin and Alar Suurna as recording engineers, and Clarence Öfwerman on production. The mixing involved the participation of Marie Fredriksson, Per Gessle, Clarence Öfwerman, and Alar Suurna.
