The story behind
When the Bee Gees were working on their album Trafalgar, the last piece to be added to the recording was Don't Wanna Live Inside Myself. This ballad, written and performed by Barry Gibb, was recorded on April 7, 1971, the same day they completed other tracks for the album such as Israel and Engines, Aeroplanes. Barry Gibb himself commented on the song that he was unsure if it reflected his mood at the time, suggesting that perhaps he wrote it while in a bad mood.
The release of Don't Wanna Live Inside Myself as a single in October 1971, two months after the major hit How Can You Mend a Broken Heart, generated expectations. Despite How Can You Mend a Broken Heart having reached number one on the US charts, surprisingly Don't Wanna Live Inside Myself did not manage to enter the Top 50 in that country. However, it performed better in other markets, notably in the Netherlands where it reached number 29. In Spain, Canada, and the United States, it was released as a double A-side along with Walking Back to Waterloo. Publications of the time, such as Cash Box and Billboard, anticipated commercial success, favorably comparing it to their previous hits and noting Atco Records' tendency to prioritize ballads for the Bee Gees' single releases during that period.
