The story behind
Dirty Old Egg-Sucking Dog, according to DoReSol
The song Dirty Old Egg-Sucking Dog, written by Jack Clement, was originally recorded by Johnny Cash for his album Everybody Loves a Nut, released in 1966. It is a piece with a humorous tone, where the lyrics narrate the story of a dog that keeps killing the narrator's chickens, who threatens to get rid of the animal. John M. Alexander himself describes it as a "funny musical caricature." It is said that Jack Clement considered it one of the two most intentionally comical songs he wrote, along with Flushed from the Bathroom of Your Heart.
The performance of Dirty Old Egg-Sucking Dog by Johnny Cash took on a special dimension when he presented it at Folsom Prison on January 13, 1968. This performance was immortalized on his live album At Folsom Prison, released that same year. This album, released by Columbia Records, was Johnny Cash's first live album and was recorded at Folsom State Prison, California. Following his success with Folsom Prison Blues in 1955, Cash had long wanted to record in a prison setting, something that materialized in 1967 with the help of producer Bob Johnston. Accompanied by June Carter, Carl Perkins, and the Tennessee Three, Cash performed two concerts at the prison. Despite initial sparse promotion by Columbia, At Folsom Prison reached number one on the Country charts.
