The story behind
There are songs that, when you hear them, transport you to another place. Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes is one of them. From the first moment, a vibrant energy envelops you, a mix of rhythms that make you move your feet almost without realizing it. What makes this track special is the way Paul Simon weaves melodies and voices, creating a sonic tapestry that feels both familiar and exotic. The collaboration with the South African group Ladysmith Black Mambazo is key here; their Zulu choirs give it a unique depth and color, bringing a message of female empowerment that resonates strongly. It is a piece that, despite its rhythmic complexity, feels incredibly accessible and joyful.
The story behind Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes is as interesting as the music itself. Paul Simon was working on his album Graceland (1986) and, during a visit to South Africa, he encountered a musical richness that he decided to incorporate. Upon returning to New York, and with the album's release date moved from July to autumn, he and engineer Roy Halee saw the opportunity to record this track. The idea arose when most of the musicians involved in the project were in the city, and they decided to capture that magic in the studio. The song became the fourth single from Graceland, released under the Warner Bros. Records label. The recording duration is 5:48, a time that allows for the full development of the richness of its arrangements.
