The story behind
Dazed and Confused, according to DoReSol
When you dive into *Dazed and Confused*, you encounter a piece that, despite its name, captivates you in a very particular way. The song is built on a descending bass line that weaves a dense atmosphere, almost like a lament. The lyrics, sometimes misinterpreted due to their tone, actually speak of a girl's indecision at the end of a relationship, a very human feeling that takes on another dimension with the music. It's interesting to note that the original version by Jake Holmes, recorded in 1967, featured more austere instrumentation: acoustic and electric guitar, and bass, without drums, and with a vocal performance described as "hurt".
The story of how this song came into the hands of Led Zeppelin is quite striking. Jake Holmes performed it live in August 1967, and at that moment, Jimmy Page, who was present, was captivated. Shortly after, The Yardbirds, the band Page belonged to, adapted it with a new arrangement, making it a key part of their performances. Finally, in 1968, Led Zeppelin recorded their own version for their debut album, adding new lyrics and vocal lines. This reinterpretation became a signature track for the band, played in many of their concerts. The issue of songwriting credits led Holmes to initiate legal action in 2010, which was settled out of court in August 2025 with a confidential agreement.
