The story behind
Crazy Love, Vol. II, according to DoReSol
In *Crazy Love, Vol. II*, Paul Simon immerses us in a piece that stands out for its enveloping atmosphere and rich sonic texture. The song, with a duration of 4 minutes and 19 seconds, is a clear example of the fusion of styles that characterized the album Graceland. Here, the influence of South African music, such as isicathamiya and mbaqanga, intertwines with elements of pop and rock, creating a unique musical tapestry. The instrumentation and arrangements, led by Chikapa “Ray” Phiri as arranger, along with the work of engineers like Roy Halee and Mark Cobrin, contribute to that feeling of depth and authenticity that invites repeated listening.
This track was conceived during a period of transition for Paul Simon. Following the commercial failure of his album Hearts and Bones in 1983 and the collapse of his marriage, Simon found a new source of inspiration in a tape of South African street music. Thus, together with engineer Roy Halee, he traveled to Johannesburg in 1984 to record with local musicians. This collaborative process, which lasted two weeks, was fundamental in shaping the sound of Graceland, an album released on August 25, 1986, under the Warner Bros. Records label, with Paul Simon taking on the role of producer.
