The story behind

Contusion, according to DoReSol

The piece *Contusion* is a sonic journey that takes you through unexpected terrains. It begins with a solid rhythmic base in 4/4, but soon dives into a play of changing time signatures, exploring 7/8, 5/4, and 3/4. This structure, reminiscent of the experimentation of progressive jazz figures like Dave Brubeck and Max Roach, draws on influences from jazz fusion, funk, and even touches of classical music. Nathan Watts' bass marks the pulse upon which these shifting rhythms are built, while Mike Sembello's guitar evokes the dexterity of jazz fusion pioneers like John McLaughlin.

The song's title itself, *Contusion*, alludes to a significant personal event in Stevie Wonder's life. In 1973, a car accident in North Carolina, where his Mercury collided with a truck, caused him a cerebral contusion that left him in a coma for five days. This traumatic experience, lived at Durham's North Carolina Central Hospital, became a driving force for his artistic direction on the album Songs in the Key of Life. Although initially its unconventional structure and absence of vocals generated diverse reactions, today its technical complexity and the emotional depth it manages to convey are recognized, transforming a difficult event into a sophisticated musical work.

This track is part of Songs in the Key of Life, released on September 28, 1976, by Tamla Records, a division of Motown. This triple album is considered the pinnacle of Stevie Wonder's "classic period," which began in 1972 with Music of My Mind. By 1974, Wonder was already a prominent figure in popular music, with a streak of critical successes like Music of My Mind (1972), Talking Book (1972), Innervisions (1973), and Fulfillingness' First Finale (1974). The duration of *Contusion* is 3:46, and it was arranged and produced by Stevie Wonder himself.
