Astor Pantaleón Piazzolla, born in Mar del Plata in 1921 and deceased in Buenos Aires in 1992, was a musician who defied conventions. While he is considered a tango icon, his path was one of constant innovation. He studied with the renowned French composer Nadia Boulanger, who taught him harmony and techniques of classical and contemporary music. In his early years, he collaborated with tango figures like Aníbal Troilo, arranging pieces for his orchestra. However, when Piazzolla began experimenting with rhythms, timbres, and harmonies that strayed from tradition, he faced resistance from the purists of the tango "Guardia Vieja". Despite criticism and being labeled the "tango killer" by some, he defended his music as "contemporary music of Buenos Aires". His compositions, often deemed bold and harmonically dissonant, did not always find easy dissemination in his time, but over time, his musical vision was recognized by musicians and intellectuals. Among his admired contemporaries were Alfredo Gobbi and Osvaldo Pugliese.
