The story behind

Codinome Beija-flor, according to DoReSol

Codinome Beija-flor is a song that holds itself together with a rhythm that refuses to be confined by traditional time signatures. It sounds as if time is stretching in a sway that never quite comes to a close, as if the melody floats between indifference and urgency. The track progresses with a cadence uncommon in Brazilian rock of the era, where the norm was four-on-the-floor or two-step beats. Here, instead, there’s a pulse that drifts between waltz and rock, as if the drummer had decided to ignore the metronome for a while. It was recorded by Cazuza in 1990, in the final months of his life, when he already knew his time was running out.

It wasn’t an album meant to be perfect: they worked fast, with equipment that wasn’t the best, in a studio that wasn’t properly soundproofed. But in that improvisation, something remained that polished productions couldn’t capture. The lyrics, written at a hotel table or in some corner of Rio, speak of a love slipping through the fingers, of a feeling that never quite finds reciprocation. There’s no forced drama or convoluted rhymes: just words that sound true, as if the author had scribbled the first thing that came to mind on a crumpled piece of paper.
