The story behind
In the context of the album The Miracle, released in May 1989, there is an instrumental piece titled Chinese Torture. This recording, lasting just one minute and forty-five seconds, is distinguished by its dark atmosphere, seeking to evoke the sensation of horror and fear associated with Chinese water torture. Unlike most of the songs on the album, this piece did not appear on any single, being exclusive to the CD edition. Over time, elements of its sound found a new space, integrating into guitar solos by Brian May, as could be heard on the Queen + Paul Rodgers tour in 2005 and 2006.
The recording of The Miracle spanned an entire year, beginning in January 1988. This creative process took place during a period marked by personal difficulties for Brian May and the diagnosis of HIV for Freddie Mercury in 1987. Originally, the album was going to be called The Invisible Men, but the title was changed to The Miracle a few weeks before its release. It was the last time the album cover included a photograph of the four members of Queen. The album's production was handled by Queen along with David Richards, with the assistance of a team of recording engineers that included Andrew Bradfield, John Brough, Angelique Cooper, Kris Fredriksson, Claude Frider, Andy Mason, and Justin Shirley-Smith.
