The story behind

Chega de saudade, according to DoReSol

Chega de saudade sounds like that afternoon when the sun filters through the blinds of an apartment in Rio and the air smells of salt and freshly brewed coffee. It’s not just a song: it’s the moment when bossa nova stopped being a local rhythm to become a universal language. Jobim’s piano moves with a calm that seems to stop time, while the voice — warm, almost whispered — paints melancholies that ask for no forgiveness. The most curious thing is that, in its four minutes and twenty seconds, there are no shouts or unnecessary adornments: just the economy of precise notes that, nonetheless, conveys an emotion that feels like it’s in your chest.

They recorded it in New York with borrowed equipment and under the watchful eye of Val Valentin at the controls, while Creed Taylor oversaw from the other side of the glass. They weren’t aiming for a perfect record: they wanted to capture that blend of samba and cool jazz that Jobim had been cooking up since years earlier, when he became obsessed with records by Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker. He himself admitted that his harmonies carried echoes of Claude Debussy, but also that Brazilian rhythm which, when mixed with the West Coast jazz, sounded like something new. The result was a track that not only defined his career but became the bridge between two musical worlds.
