The lyrics, for example, delve into the less bright side of Hollywood, touching on themes like superficiality, plastic surgery, and how pop culture can distort our perception. The creation of Californication was not a straightforward path. According to accounts, the band had considerable difficulty shaping it, with the lyrics written but without finding the right melody or riffs. It was at that moment of doubt that John Frusciante arrived with the solution, as if he had deciphered the song's enigma. For the music video, they were inspired by the video game Crazy Taxi, creating an interactive narrative where the band members search for "asterisks" in different scenarios, from snowy hills to the depths of the ocean. The clip also shows drummer Chad Smith snowboarding, something he himself admits he has never done in real life, and Anthony Kiedis swimming among sharks. The recording of this song, which is part of the self-titled album released in 1999, featured production by Rick Rubin and sound engineering by Jim Scott. The album marked Frusciante's return to guitar, contributing a distinctive sound that moved away from previous works.
