The story behind
Buffalo Stance (Sukka mix), according to DoReSol
The Sukka mix version of Buffalo Stance isn't just another remix: it's the one that took the world by storm. It sounds like a loop that stretches without haste but without pause, where the bass sets the pace with a cadence that seems to float above the rest. The detail lies in how the drum cuts overlap without losing clarity, as if someone had found a way for the rhythm to breathe at the same time as the melody. That balance between the organic and the calculated is what makes this version sound not like filler, but like a necessary evolution of the original track.
The track was born from an unexpected detour. In 1986, Neneh appeared as a guest vocalist on Looking Good Diving with the Wild Bunch, a single by Morgan-McVey produced by Stock Aitken Waterman that went unnoticed. But on the B-side, a seed remained: a rhythmic fragment that Tim Simenon, of Bomb the Bass, later decided to rescue. The result was recorded in London with equipment that wasn't from an elite studio, yet it ended up being the hit that charted in the Billboard Hot 100, UK Singles Chart, Netherlands, and Sweden simultaneously. Raw Like Sushi, her 1989 debut album, already came loaded with hits like Kisses on the Wind and Manchild, but it was this version — clocking in at 5 minutes and 22 seconds — that ultimately defined the sound of an era.
