Donna Summer, whose real name was LaDonna Adrian Gaines, was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on December 31, 1948. She stood out in the disco and pop genres during the 70s and early 80s. Throughout her career, she won five Grammy Awards and was the first artist to place three consecutive albums at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. She sold over 100 million copies worldwide. Her musical career began in her church choirs, before joining bands influenced by the Motown Sound. In the 1960s, she joined the psychedelic rock band Crow. She adopted the surname of her husband, Helmut Sommer, as her stage name.
