The story behind
The song Baby I’m a Star, with its imposing duration of 9 minutes and 12 seconds, emerges as a fundamental piece within Prince's sonic universe, especially in the context of the album Purple Rain. This work, released in 1984, was not only a resounding sales success, surpassing 25 million copies and consolidating itself as one of the most successful soundtracks in history, but it also became the vehicle for Prince and his band, The Revolution, to define the so-called "Minneapolis sound". This style, which Prince began to shape from earlier albums like Dirty Mind and Controversy, found its ultimate expression in Purple Rain, notably influencing the debut of The Time.
This album, considered by many as the magnum opus of Prince Rogers Nelson, was released under the Warner Bros. Records label. The production of Purple Rain, along with the film of the same name, catapulted Prince to the peak of his popularity. The title track of the album, Purple Rain, was awarded an Oscar for best original song score, and the album itself received a Grammy Award. Other tracks like When Doves Cry and Let’s Go Crazy also achieved global recognition, cementing his superstar status. Prince, originally from Minneapolis and who passed away in Chanhassen in 2016, was a multifaceted artist who explored genres such as rock, soul, and funk, and who for a period was also known by an unpronounceable symbol.
