The story behind

When you dive into Baby, Baby I Need You, you encounter a piece that captures the essence of The Temptations' early soul. This song, released in 1964 as the B-side to the hit Girl (Why You Wanna Make Me Blue), is an example of how the group explored different facets of their sound. The lyrics speak of deep devotion, where the narrator promises his beloved that he will always let her know how much he needs, desires, and loves her, especially if their hearts become one. Musically, it's an interesting fusion of Gospel and Doo-wop, where the voices of all the original members intertwine. While Eddie Kendricks stands out with his high falsetto, the bridge and outro sections allow other members, like Paul Williams, to take the vocal lead at times. It's remarkable how each of the five original members has their moment to shine, singing the last word of each verse in a five-part harmony. This recording marks the last time we will hear the voice of Elbridge "Al" Bryant on a single, and it is also significant for Paul Williams, as it represents one of his last major vocal contributions before David Ruffin solidified his position as the group's lead singer.

The recording of Baby, Baby I Need You took place at Hitsville USA, Studio A, during various sessions in September and October 1963. The song was written and produced by Smokey Robinson, a key figure in the development of the Motown sound. Although Baby, Baby I Need You did not reach the national charts, it did have a significant impact in some regions, becoming a fan favorite and a fundamental part of the group's live repertoire. In fact, it was performed by the "classic five" lineup on their first live album, Temptations Live!, where it was met with an ovation. In 1966, The Wailers, featuring Bob Marley, covered this song, retitled I Need You. This track is part of the album The Temptations Sing Smokey, released in 1965, which, as its name suggests, is entirely composed of songs written and produced by Smokey Robinson.
