The story behind

The first time you listen to Ayer nomás, you're left with that melody that seems to unravel in the air, as if each note floated before falling. Los Gatos' 1967 version carries an air of a simple ballad but with an unexpected weight: the D7 chord on the second beat of the Do-D7-Fa-Sol-Do progression is what gives it that touch of doubt, that "not entirely convinced" feeling that runs through the entire song. It's not just the lyrics that change between the two versions — the original by Pipo Lernoud spoke of a country that failed to deliver on its promises, while Litto Nebbia's turned it into a song about love that is no more. It's the way the music accompanies that shift: the same foundation that Moris would later revisit in his 1970 album Treinta, but with a different color.

The song was born at a key moment for Argentine rock: the album Los Gatos, where La Balsa had already broken the mold in July 1967. Sales exceeded 250,000 copies, and the entire country turned to listen to something that sounded different. But Ayer nomás wasn't an immediate hit like its B-side companion; in fact, Lernoud's original lyrics — raw, political — had to give way to censorship under the dictatorship. Nebbia, leading Los Gatos, flipped it: he turned a social critique into a song about heartbreak, thus avoiding trouble with the government. That said, the essence of the melody remained intact, even when Moris recorded it years later on his debut album, Treinta minutos de vida, where the same riff repeats but with a different weight, as if time had added another layer of nostalgia.
