The story behind
In Atomicum, Babasónicos introduced something rarely heard in Argentine rock at the time: a short, direct track with a groove that hooks from the first few seconds. It’s not just that it lasts two and a half minutes — it’s that within that time, it achieves something rare for the era: sounding both urgent and calculated at once, as if the accelerated rhythm never lets the brain catch its breath. The opening riff, the one that seems to escape from an old rhythm machine, is what lingers in your head the most after listening; it’s not a flashy solo, but it’s there, setting the pace like a heartbeat that won’t stop.
They recorded it in the midst of a turbulent year for the country, when the December 2001 crisis had left everything upside down. For Babasónicos, Jessico — the album featuring Atomicum — was the one that catapulted them to another level: not just musically, but because suddenly they were seen as part of that list of bands defining what was sounding in Argentina at the time. Magazines like Rolling Stone, Inrokuptibles, and the Sí! supplement of the newspaper Clarín chose it as the best album of the year, and even musicians surveyed by Página placed it at the top. Outside the country, it even won an award for best Latin rock in a Los Angeles magazine, and in Argentina it ranked 16th among the 100 best albums of Argentine rock according to Rolling Stone. All of this in a track that doesn’t even reach three minutes.
