The story behind
There are songs that are not just heard, but felt in the body when played. Al colosseo is one of those pieces: a track that advances with a cadence that seems taken from a military parade, but with an unexpected twist that makes it hypnotic. The bass traces a melodic line that repeats like an echo, while the voice of Vinicio Capossela weaves verses that sound like both chronicle and legend at the same time. It is not a rhythm that invites dancing, but to mark the beat with your feet, as if each note carried the weight of an ancient story. The perfect length —4 minutes and 9 seconds— gives it just the right measure not to tire, but to leave a mark.
This song was born at the same time Capossela was working on Ovunque proteggi, his sixth studio album, recorded in 2005 between the Officine Meccaniche of Mauro Pagani. The album was presented in January 2006 at the Chiesa di San Carpoforo in Milano, but its essence had been gestating for years. Capossela, born in Hannover but raised in Irpinia, always had one foot in tradition and another in experimentation, and here he proves it: the lyrics blend the everyday with the epic, as if the Colosseum were not just a monument, but a silent witness to stories that repeat themselves. The album was soon recognized: in 2006 it won the Targa Tenco, and the following year the magazine Mojo ranked it among the best albums in the world. Today it remains on the list of the 100 most important Italian albums of all time, according to Rolling Stone Italia.
