Mojarra Electrica

Mojarra Electrica started in 2001, when Jacobo Vélez, a guy who knew music well, wanted to do something more than just play songs. He wanted to understand better the Afro-Colombian music, take it out of its confines and bring it to another place. It wasn't just about the sound, but about how it moved, how it was built.

From the beginning, the idea was to mix what was in the streets with what could be done in the rehearsal room. On Calle 19 de Bogotá, where it all started, people who knew about rhythms and also about theory came together. They grew, adding musicians coming from formal schools and others born in the neighborhood, in the heart of the traditions.

More about Mojarra Electrica

Biography

The Album Raza was an important step. It wasn't just a record, it was an attempt to do something that hadn't been done before. They used instruments like the alegre and the marimba, but also drums, electric guitar and bass. What they did wasn't a soft folk, but something that moved, that had roots but also space to grow.

They didn't look for a name that defined them, but a sound that wouldn't stay still. What they did wasn't just remembering the old, but imagining what could be. With that, Mojarra Electrica didn't just play music, but built something that still doesn't have a fixed place.
