Calle 19

The sound of Calle 19 by Mojarra Eléctrica is forged at a very particular sonic crossroads. Born in 2001 under the direction of Jacobo Vélez, the project sought to explore and showcase the foundations of Afro-Colombian music. The idea was to take those ancestral rhythms and fuse them with elements of urban music, such as jazz, funk, rock, Cuban timba, and rap. This album, Calle 19, represents a further step in that search for a unique sound, a genre under construction that draws from both deep roots and contemporary trends.

About the album

Calle 19, according to DoReSol

From its beginnings on Calle 19 in Bogotá to its current lineup, which combines musicians with academic training with singers who come directly from folk traditions, Mojarra Eléctrica has pursued a powerful and original sound. They use both folk instruments like the alegre and marimba, alongside modern instrumentation of drums, electric guitar, and bass. The result is a blend that unites the Afro traditions of Colombia, the Antilles, and North America, creating a proposal that goes beyond softened folklore, offering a fresh sound that is still being fully defined.
