Mississippi John Hurt

Mississippi John Hurt, whose real name was John Smith Hurt, is a reference in country blues, known for his distinctive style and his ability to connect with the audience through his music. Born in 1893 in Teoc, Mississippi, and raised in Avalon, Hurt developed his passion for the guitar at an early age, teaching himself to play. His fingerpicking technique, melodic and syncopated, made him an ideal musician to liven up local dances and parties, where his music resonated with the rhythm of life in his community.

Over the years, Hurt worked as a farmer and sharecropper, but his musical talent did not go unnoticed. In 1923, he had the opportunity to record with violinist Willie Narmour, which led him to an audition with Okeh Records in 1928. Although his first recordings, such as Monday Morning Blues, did not achieve the expected success, his unique style and his connection with other blues musicians, like Blind Lemon Jefferson and Bessie Smith, made him stand out in the music scene of Memphis and New York. However, after the commercial failure of his records and the bankruptcy of Okeh during the Great Depression, Hurt retired from music and returned to a farmer's life in Avalon.

Biography

Hurt's rediscovery came in 1952, when his rendition of Frankie and Johnny was included in the influential collection The Anthology of American Folk Music. This generated renewed interest in his work, and in 1963, musicologist Tom Hoskins located him. Convinced of his authenticity, Hoskins encouraged him to move to Washington D.C. and resume his musical career. In 1963, Hurt recorded the album Folk Songs and Blues, which was released in August of that year, and participated in folk festivals, where his music resonated with new generations. His performance at the Newport Folk Festival and other events consolidated his place in the American folk revival, allowing him to share his musical legacy with a wider audience.
