Marco Masini

With a wide vocal range and an innate ability for melody, Marco Masini has left his mark on Canzone Italiana with songs that have become references for the genre, such as Ci vorrebbe il mare, T'innamorerai and Bella stronza. His style, often direct and with lyrics that dared to explore uncommon territories, earned him early and sustained recognition. This singer-songwriter, born in Firenze in 1964, showed his musical talent from a young age, playing the piano by ear at three years old and later studying composers like Johann Sebastian Bach and Frédéric Chopin, without neglecting his interest in Pop and Rock music. His career includes two victories at the Sanremo Festival, first in 1990 with Disperato in the "Novità" category, and then in 2004 with L'uomo volante. He also won the Festivalbar in 1991 thanks to his album Malinconoia, and more recently in 2021, he was the author of the song Superbabbo, winner of the Zecchino d'Oro.

Masini's path to stardom was not easy. During his high school years, he formed the group Errata Corrige, but the demands of a musical life, with its long nights, clashed with his accounting studies. This incompatibility led him to leave school, causing family tensions, especially with his father Giancarlo, who did not look favorably upon his musical vocation. The situation worsened with the early death of his mother Anna Maria in 1984, a deep blow for young Marco. Despite these difficulties and the reluctance of record companies, who considered his lyrics "too atypical", his persistence led him to meet Bob Rosati, who opened the doors of a studio for his first demos. There he met the composer and poet Beppe Dati, with whom he began creating material. The crucial meeting came in 1986 with Giancarlo Bigazzi, who recognized his talent as a musician and arranger, incorporating him into his team along with the guitarist Mario Manzani. This period was fundamental, as Masini collaborated in soundtracks like Mediterraneo, was the guiding voice of Si può dare di più, and participated as a concert performer in tours by artists like Tozzi, playing at the Royal Albert Hall in London in 1988, and working on the production and arrangements of the album Cosa resterá... by Raf.

More about Marco Masini

Biography

After several years of behind-the-scenes work, his moment as a solo artist arrived. Although in 1988 a single titled Uomini, promoted by Mario Ragni, did not take him to Sanremo, Masini did not give up. In 1990, with the song Disperato, co-written with Bigazzi and Dati, he finally made his debut at the Sanremo Festival, where he not only won in the "Novità" category and the critics' prize, but his single remained in the top 20 of sales for more than seven months. This success led to the creation of his first album, Marco Masini, which included Disperato and Dal buio, a song he had written for Massimo Ranieri. The following year, at Sanremo 1991, he presented Perché lo fai, a song that placed third in the festival and whose single became the best-selling in Italy that year. The release of his second album, Malinconoia, a title that combines "malinconia" and "paranoia", solidified his style and his place in Italian music, leading his music to sell over seven million copies worldwide throughout his career.
