Magic Sam Blues Band

Samuel Gene Maghett, known artistically as Magic Sam, left a deep mark on the Chicago blues scene. Born in 1937 in Grenada County, Mississippi, his passion for music began upon hearing greats like Muddy Waters and Little Walter. At the age of 19, he moved to Chicago, where his talent led him to sign with Cobra Records. His first single, All Your Love, released in 1957, marked the beginning of his recognition as a prominent blues musician, thanks to his distinctive guitar style with a characteristic vibrato.

The nickname Magic Sam was coined by his friend and bassist Mack Thompson during their first recording session, aiming to capture his essence. Before that, Sam went by the name of Good Rocking Sam, which already belonged to another artist. His move to Chicago in 1956 allowed him to perform in blues clubs on the city’s west side, where his guitar skills opened many doors. Although his recordings between 1957 and 1959, such as Easy Baby, did not reach the charts, his influence extended beyond local musicians, helping to define the sound of the West Side alongside artists like Otis Rush and Buddy Guy.
