Laufey

The sound of Laufey is built on a classical foundation that dissolves into jazz melodies with a modern pop touch. Her songs breathe between string arrangements and voices that flow like an intimate dialogue, where each note seems designed to sound close even when it’s far from the ear. It’s not pure jazz nor conventional pop: it’s that blend that emerges when the technique of a conservatory meets the freedom of a college dorm room, and the result is a style that sounds like modern jazz without forced labels.

In 2021, when she released her first EP Typical Of Me, it was already clear she wasn’t following the path of others. Recorded between classes at the Berklee College of Music, the album collected songs written in impossible schedules, with that air of creative chaos that would later become her trademark. By April of that year, the single Street by Street was already topping Icelandic charts, but it was the recognition from artists like Billie Eilish that opened doors for her beyond her home country. That same year, her cover of I Wish You Love caught the attention of American Songwriter, which included it among the best releases of 2021.

Biography

Her first album, Everything I Know About Love, arrived in August 2022 and debuted at the top of Billboard’s alternative charts, proving that her style—a mix of jazz, classical, and pop—could resonate with diverse audiences. A few months later, in January 2022, her appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! introduced her to the American public in a way no other stage could have achieved. But it was Bewitched, released in 2023, that took her to another level: not only for the glowing reviews, but because at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards, she won the Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album prize. That same night, she shared the stage with Billy Joel performing Turn the Lights Back, a detail that spoke to her place in today’s music: someone who respects traditions but reinvents them from today.

In 2025, with A Matter Of Time—released on August 22—she won the same award at the Grammy Awards again, solidifying a career that seems written in two tempos: that of classical training and that of pop instinct. Her music remains that bridge between what her family passed down—her mother a violinist, her grandfather at the Central Conservatory of China—and what she chose to build with her own hands. She doesn’t aim to sound like anyone else, nor like what already exists. And that’s the magic.
