Julio Melgar

Julio Melgar was not just a singer: his voice and songs sounded like a bridge between the sacred and the everyday. In his tracks, the acoustic guitar blended with rhythms that jumped from gospel to rock without ever losing sight of the central message. It wasn’t music for a single genre, but for anyone seeking something more than melodies: a direct connection to what it conveyed. «Cuerdas de amor», «Creo en tí», or «Estás aquí» didn’t become hits by chance; they carried years of work in ministries and congregations, where worship wasn’t a style, but a way of life. His sound didn’t follow rules—it broke them to create something fresh, something that resonated with faith in motion.

In 1994, together with a group of musicians and friends, he founded Hacedores de historia, a ministry that didn’t limit itself to playing in churches but took to the streets with the idea of bringing music that united generations and cultures. They weren’t aiming to fill stadiums, but to fill the spaces where people gathered with meaning. This project led them to travel across Guatemala and beyond, always with the same premise: music as a tool to restore, heal, and challenge the status quo. Their first album, Día de Pentecostés, arrived in 2002, but it was in 2004 with Creo en tí that the public began to recognize his name. The namesake single not only became an anthem but also opened doors to the Premios Arpa 2009, where the album was nominated in two categories. They weren’t seeking fame, but the chance to share something they felt was necessary.

More about Julio Melgar

Biography

In 2011, with Vuelve, he invited figures like Danilo Montero and Juan Carlos Alvarado to join the project, proving that his music wasn’t a solitary effort but a collective one. Songs like «Cristo» and «Vuelve» gained music videos that reinforced the message, but most importantly, these songs resonated with those who listened. Five years later, in Se trata de ti, he took collaboration a step further by recording «Eres» alongside his son Lowsan Melgar, a song that didn’t just sound like family, but like legacy. «Estás aquí», another track, became a recurring theme in churches and concerts, as if time had no effect on those melodies.

In his final months, in March 2019, he held a farewell concert in Ciudad de Guatemala titled Unidos con Julio Melgar, where he reunited with colleagues like Miel San Marcos, Redimi2, and Marco Barrientos. It was there that he performed «Tus cuerdas de amor» for the first time alongside his son, a moment captured as a symbol of what he had built. Weeks later, in an Instagram Live, he shared his battle with the cancer that afflicted him. On April 19 of that same year, at the age of 46, he passed away, but his music did not stop. «Tus cuerdas de amor», released posthumously by his son, not only received a nomination at the Premios GMA Dove 2019 for Spanish Song of the Year but also proved that his influence remained alive. Even in Legado, the album by Lowsan Melgar, a final collaboration was recorded: «Me basta tu Palabra», where his voice, recorded before his passing, joined his son’s and Miel San Marcos’ in a closing that sounded eternal.
