Gente de Zona

Gente de Zona sounds like a neighborhood shout that slipped into the world's speakers. It's not just reggaeton with Cuban flavor; it's the blend of two worlds: the catchy rhythm that arrived from Panama and Puerto Rico in the 90s, and the street hip hop of Alamar, where Alexander Delgado grew up listening to local MCs. Delgado and his partner Michel “El Karo” started in 2000 by bringing together rappers from their area to try something different, and the name Gente de Zona —with its rebellious apostrophe— already made it clear they didn’t want to sound like anyone else. At parties in Guanabacoa or Regla, where hip hop reigned, they delivered lyrics that spoke of their reality but with a rhythm that invited dancing. They weren’t aiming for pure reggaeton: they wanted their music to be a bridge between traditional Cuban sounds and what was already pulsing in the streets.

The turning point came in 2005, when Michel left and Alexander formed a trio with Jacob Forever and Nando Pro. That year, they recorded their first —and so far only— album, and though success took time, the single Pa’ la Gente de Mi Zona made its way onto Cuban TV. It wasn’t easy: Delgado recalls they nearly gave up, but relentless work led them to perform at international festivals and rub shoulders with Alamar’s annual rap scene. For them, reggaeton wasn’t a commercial springboard but a tool to carry their stories —and those of their people— beyond the neighborhoods. “We wanted our music to be for all Cubans,” Delgado said, and that’s exactly what they did: from Alamar to Miami, from Guanabacoa to Europe, where they now tour at least twice a year.

Biography

Their most well-known songs emerged from that blend of street and studio. Bailando, with Enrique Iglesias in 2014, took them to the Latin Grammys with three wins and global charts. But earlier, in 2008, they had already made their mark with Lo mejor que suena ahora vol.1 and its sequel, where tracks like Animales climbed the charts in Cuba, Miami, and even Europe. Later, collaborations like La gozadera with Marc Anthony or Traidora cemented their status as a unique voice in cubaton. Even in their most recent production, A Full, they remain true to their essence: Mama Me Lo Contó and Preguntan are anthems born from everyday life, like when Delgado and Jacob Forever dedicated a song to fans who followed them from the back at every show. They’re not stars who drifted from their roots: they’re the people of the zone who never stopped singing.
