More about Fred Astaire
Biography
What’s curious is that Astaire didn’t settle for being a film dancer. In the 1960s, when classic musicals no longer dominated the screen, he ventured into drama and even thrillers, proving his versatility went beyond steps. His sole Academy Award nomination as an actor—for The Towering Inferno in 1974—came at a time when many already considered him retired. Yet even then, his presence remained impeccable: every line, every glance, every gesture carried the same economy of means as his youthful choreography. And though the world will always remember him for Ginger Rogers, for Cole Porter, or for those suits that seemed painted onto his figure, what’s most fascinating is how he made dance stop being a spectacle and become a universal language.
