Dread Mar-I

Dread Mar-I is the voice that shaped Spanish-language reggae with a sound that blends ska, rock, and pop, yet always carries that unmistakable Jamaican essence. It’s not just the rhythm that defines his music, but how he makes the lyrics—often simple in structure—breathe with the same intensity as the guitar riffs or the accompanying brass. When you listen to «Tú sin mí», for example, you’re not hearing just any song: it’s a track that, over time, became a massive phenomenon without losing that organic touch that makes it sound like it’s being played live in a neighborhood courtyard.

His career took a pivotal turn in 2005 with the release of Jah guía, his first solo album. That year not only marked the start of his solo journey but also connected him to projects already making waves in the scene, such as lending his voice as the lead singer on Luz by Mensajeros Reggae or contributing as a backing vocalist for Los Cafres, even temporarily replacing the official singer at some shows. But it was in 2006, with the launch of Hermanos, that his music began resonating beyond Buenos Aires: the album, with its message of peace and unity, led him to sell out Niceto Club and other venues in Greater Buenos Aires, and to perform on stages like Luna Park at the Bob Marley Day, sharing the bill with international reggae legends.

More about Dread Mar-I

Biography

In 2008, Amor-Es solidified his presence across Latin America. That year, Dread Mar-I became the Argentine reggae artist with the most concerts in less than eight months, playing in cities along the Atlantic coast, in Chile, and Uruguay. But his evolution didn’t stop there: in 2010, Viví en do showcased his ability to explore new sonic territories, recorded and mastered at Estudios Panda by Emil Cura. Later, in 2014, En el Sendero and in 2018 Caminarás Caminos strengthened his connection with audiences, while his 2018 show at Parque Camet in Mar del Plata—attended by nearly 100,000 people—made it clear his music had no borders within Argentina. Today, with milestones like «Tú sin mí» surpassing one billion views on YouTube, it’s no exaggeration to say Dread Mar-I didn’t just define a style—he took it to places where Spanish-language reggae had never reached before.
