More about Desmond Dekker & the Aces
Biography
His best-known songs are not just hits but documents of their time. "007 (Shanty Town)" (1967) captured the spirit of the *rude boys* without melodrama: the lyrics spoke of the streets, but the music sounded like a call to dance. "Israelites" (1968), his biggest international success, brought reggae to European radios, where British mods adopted it as an anthem. And "It Mek" (1969) proved he could mix humor and social critique without losing its punch. With the Aces —Wilson James and Easton Barrington Howard— he crafted a sound that was both choral and personal, as if every note carried the weight of an entire community. Dekker didn’t invent ska or reggae, but he gave them a voice that sounded authentic, as if Kingston’s streets had found their own choir.
