More about Childish Gambino
Biography
In 2011, when he signed with Glassnote Records, he had already spent years releasing independent projects like Culdesac or Poindexter, albums that sounded like someone who hadn’t yet found their direction. But with Camp, his first major-label album, he made it clear his rap wasn’t just for laughs: it blended dark humor with lyrics about loneliness and frustration, all wrapped in beats that sometimes sounded like a 90s throwback and other times like something completely new. Two years later came Because the Internet, an album that hid nothing: songs like "3005" proved he could be catchy without losing depth, and his vocal style — shifting from whispers to screams in seconds — became a trademark.
The most radical turn came in 2016 with Awaken, My Love!, an album that abandoned conventional rap to embrace 70s psychedelic funk. The single "Redbone" didn’t just reach the top 20 on Billboard; it earned him his first Grammy, in the category of Best Traditional R&B Performance. But the moment that cemented him as a name impossible to ignore was "This Is America" in 2018: the song not only debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, but dominated the Grammys, taking home four awards in a single night, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year. It was proof that he could make music that sounded like a massive hit without ceasing to be personal — even uncomfortable.
After that came 3.15.20 in 2020, an album that explored electronic sounds and unexpected collaborations, and in 2024, Atavista, a reimagining of that material. His latest work to date, Bando Stone & the New World, continues that line of constant reinvention. The curious thing is that, while his music changes, there’s something that always remains: the ability to make each project sound like the first time you hear it. No matter if he’s rapping, singing, or directing a series like Atlanta — he always seems one step ahead of what the public expects.
