Celia Cruz

When we think of vibrant rhythms and a voice that spreads joy, it's impossible not to evoke Celia Cruz. Born in Havana in 1925, her path in music began at a very young age, almost like a game, lulling the little ones with songs. Although her father dreamed of her becoming a teacher, Celia's heart beat to the rhythm of the orchestras she heard from outside the cafés. It was her mother who recognized that innate talent, that gift for music that would lead her to abandon her teaching studies and dive headfirst into the National Conservatory of Music. From those early days, her voice made itself heard on radio programs and in the streets of Havana, participating in shows and winning her first prizes, ranging from a cake to a silver chain. Her involvement in groups like Sonora Caracas and, later, her 15-year association with the renowned Sonora Matancera, solidified her place in the Cuban music scene, performing and popularizing genres like Cuban son, guaracha, and bolero.

The course of her life and career took a significant turn in 1960, following the Cuban Revolution. Celia made the decision to leave her homeland and settled in the United States, becoming a reference and a voice for the Cuban exile community. It was during this period, especially in the 1970s, that she fully immersed herself in the genre that would catapult her to international fame: salsa. Her connection with the Fania All Stars marked a milestone, leading her to explore and master this fusion of rhythms that would define her. Throughout her career, she demonstrated a remarkable ability to reinvent herself, keeping her music fresh and connecting with new audiences, which allowed her to remain relevant until the end of her days.
