Bon Iver

Bon Iver is an American indie folk band formed in 2006 by singer-songwriter Justin Vernon. The band also includes Mike Noyce, Sean Carey, Colin Stetson and Matthew McCaughan, among other occasional collaborators. The first album by Vernon, For Emma, Forever Ago, was independently produced in 2007. Most of this work was recorded during a three-month retreat in an isolated cabin in Wisconsin. In 2012, Bon Iver won the Grammy for Best New Artist and Best Alternative Music Album for their album Bon Iver, Bon Iver. Additionally, the song "Holocene" from this album was nominated for Song and Recording of the Year. The name Bon Iver is a play on words derived from the French "bon hiver" (which means good winter), inspired by a greeting from the television series "Doctor in Alaska" (Northern Exposure). In 2021, the American magazine Pitchfork included the band in its list of the 200 most influential artists of the last 25 years.During his school years, Vernon formed the band Mount Vernon with John Barreca, another independent music composer.

He also created DeYarmond Edison, an indie-rock band originating from Eau Claire, Wisconsin, where Vernon still resides. DeYarmond Edison was composed of Vernon, Brad and Phil Cook, and Joe Westerlund. After achieving recognition in the music scene of Eau, the band members moved to Raleigh, North Carolina, in search of new opportunities. They self-produced four albums, the first named after the band and the second titled Silent Signs. An EP with unreleased material is available on their Myspace page. After almost a year in Raleigh, Vernon left the band and his romantic relationship, returning to Wisconsin. The other members of DeYarmond Edison formed a new band called Megafaun and maintained their friendship with Vernon.Justin Vernon collaborated with the Yellow Bird Project to raise funds through the sale of t-shirts, directing the proceeds to a women's shelter in Toronto, Ontario.During live performances, Sean Carey (drums, vocals, piano, vibraphone) and Mike Noyce (vocals, baritone guitar, guitar) join Vernon.

More about Bon Iver

Biography

Noyce was Vernon's guitar student in high school, while Carey approached Vernon at the first Bon Iver concert, claiming he could play and sing all the songs, which led to both performing some together.Due to the extensive use of overdubbing in For Emma, Forever Ago, Vernon was concerned about the lack of voices to replicate the sound of the album live. To solve this, Bon Iver distributed sheet music to the audience so they could sing during the concerts. In an interview with Pitchfork, Vernon explained: "I don't want to be the guy who sings with an acoustic guitar, because that's pretty boring. The song really needs 80-500 people singing or whatever the atmosphere of the room gives.

It needs that touch."After the band's dissolution, the end of his romantic relationship, and facing an illness (hepatitis mononucleosis), Vernon left Raleigh and spent three months in his father's cabin in northern Wisconsin. During this time, he conceived the name "Bon Iver" while watching the series "Doctor in Alaska" on DVD. An episode showed the residents of Alaska leaving their homes after the first snowfall and wishing each other a "bon hiver" ("good winter" in French). Initially, Vernon wrote "boniverre", but after learning French, he decided not to use it, since "hiver" reminded him of "liver" (liver), related to his illness at that time."
