The Art of Loving

With The Art of Loving, Olivia Dean brings us her second studio offering, released in 2025. The overall sound moves between contemporary pop and R&B, with touches of soul, bossa nova, and jazz pop, evoking the warmth of Motown. The production featured Dean and a team including Julian Bunetta, Matt Hales, Bastian Langebæk, and Leon Michels, among others. The album, which has a total runtime of 34 minutes and 23 seconds, was recorded between 2024 and 2025 in an East London house that was transformed into a studio for eight weeks.

About the album

The Art of Loving, according to DoReSol

The creative process for The Art of Loving was closely tied to Olivia Dean's personal reflection. She herself has commented that the title was inspired by an art exhibition by Mickalene Thomas, which in turn responded to the writings of bell hooks on love. This concept drove her to dedicate eight intense weeks to writing and finishing most of the songs in early 2025. The result is an album that, according to Dean, was healing to make and aims to connect with the listener in an open and sincere way.

The album was met with critical acclaim and had a significant international impact. It reached number one on the charts in Australia, Ireland, the Netherlands, and New Zealand, in addition to reaching number one in the UK. There, Dean made history by being the first British solo artist to simultaneously top the album and singles charts since 2021. In North America, The Art of Loving positioned itself in the top ten of major charts such as the US Billboard 200 and the Canadian Albums Chart. Among the singles that preceded its release are Nice to Each Other, Lady Lady, and Man I Need, as well as So Easy (To Fall in Love).
