Middle of Nowhere

The album Middle of Nowhere, released in 1997, marks Hanson's debut on a major record label, PolyGram Records and Mercury Records. This work stands out for its more polished production compared to their previous independent efforts, such as Boomerang. During the recording, the band members were between 11 and 16 years old, adding an interesting nuance to their fresh and youthful sound. One of the album's most dramatic songs, Yearbook, was not performed live until the recording of Middle of Nowhere Acoustic in 2007.

About the album

Middle of Nowhere, according to DoReSol

The album spawned five singles, with MMMBop being the most prominent, reaching number one in the United States and in at least eleven countries. Additionally, Middle of Nowhere reached the second spot on the Billboard 200, only surpassed by the Spice Girls' album Spice. Worldwide, the album sold around 10 million copies, with nearly 4 million in the United States, earning it four times platinum status. Critics received the album positively, highlighting the band's authenticity; David Browne of Entertainment Weekly noted that "the lack of guile is the most endearing quality of Hanson".

Each track on the album was written by the three brothers, Isaac, Taylor, and Zac, with Taylor as the lead vocalist on most songs. The production was handled by the Dust Brothers and Stephen Lironi, who contributed a distinctive sound that helped define the band's identity in its early days. Undoubtedly, Middle of Nowhere represents a key moment in Hanson's career, laying the groundwork for their future in the music industry.
