The story behind
Your Latest Trick, according to DoReSol
The sound of a saxophone evoking nocturnal atmospheres and distant cities is the starting point of Your Latest Trick. This track, part of the album Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits, is distinguished by its instrumental introduction, a piece that has become so recognizable that, it is said, it is common to hear it in music stores when people try out new saxophones, something that Mark Knopfler always dreamed of. The studio version features the trumpet of Randy Brecker and the saxophone of Michael Brecker, while in live performances, Chris White took over on saxophone.
Recorded at AIR studios in Montserrat, this song was released as a single in April 1986. The original idea, according to a Classic Rock critic, was for it to have a faster, jazz-like rhythm, but the suggestion to slow down the tempo and adopt an air of "solemn bossa nova" is what defined the version we know. The track also appeared on later albums such as On the Night. The saxophone melody, moreover, found a new home as theme music for a television series in Hong Kong.
