The story behind

Words, according to DoReSol

The song Words, born from the pen of Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb, has a particular history. It is said to have emerged after an argument, a moment of tension that, ironically, inspired a piece about how words, good or bad, can profoundly affect people. Barry Gibb himself commented in 1996 that they composed it with their manager, Robert Stigwood, in mind. The recording took place on October 3, 1967, at IBC Studios in London, along with other tracks, and it was one of the few where the lead vocals fell solely on Barry Gibb, becoming a highlight in their live performances.

During the recording session, there were interesting anecdotes. Robin Gibb, in charge of the piano part, fell asleep several times while Barry tried to get him to teach him the melody. In the end, Barry had to take on composing that part himself. On the other hand, Maurice Gibb and sound engineer Damon Lyon-Shaw experimented with the console, achieving a very particular piano sound, compressed and with a metallic timbre that sounded as if many pianos were playing at once, an effect that was later integrated into many of their productions. This track, released in January 1968, reached the top spot in countries like Germany, Canada, Switzerland, and the Netherlands, and became the third Top 10 hit for the Bee Gees in the United Kingdom. Over the years, it has been covered by other artists, including a notable version by Boyzone in 1996, which reached number one in the UK.
